About the museum

Wortnerův dům stands by the Černá věž (Black Tower) in the historic centre of České Budějovice. It was created in the first half of the 16th century by joining two older Gothic houses; around 1558 the then owner, Jan Kelbl, had a late Gothic portal installed and the houses merged. From 1860 the house belonged to the Wortner family, and at the beginning of the 20th century it housed a well-known distillery.

The house has been a cultural monument since 1958. After reconstruction in 1989–1992 it passed into the administration of the Alšova jihočeská galerie, and in January 1993 the gallery’s exhibition spaces opened there. In 2018–2019 it underwent further reconstruction, during which a lift and toilets were added in the courtyard wing.

Today it serves as the gallery’s second exhibition venue. The permanent exhibition draws on the collections of the Alšova jihočeská galerie: medieval art is displayed in the cellar rooms, and South Bohemian art, interwar avant-garde and Czech art after 1945 on the upper floors.
