About the museum

The Alšova jihočeská galerie was established in the 1950s and is named after the painter Mikoláš Aleš. Its collections were handed over to the newly founded institution in 1953. At first the gallery was housed in the building of the town museum, because the Zámecká jízdárna (castle riding hall) in Hluboká nad Vltavou was undergoing reconstruction; it opened to the public there on 15 April 1956. The riding hall was built in 1845–1913 to a design by Franz Beer, and in 1953 Jaroslav Fidra adapted it for the gallery's purposes.

The gallery manages more than 17,000 works of art. The core of its collections is South Bohemian Gothic art from the 14th to 16th centuries, along with European painting from the 16th to 19th centuries, including Flemish and Dutch painting of the 17th century, and Czech art of the 20th and 21st centuries, for example the Surrealists and Mikuláš Medek. Since 2001 it has been established by the South Bohemian Region.

The gallery also has further branches: the Mezinárodní muzeum keramiky (International Museum of Ceramics) in Bechyně and the Wortnerův dům in České Budějovice, which has an exhibition from the gallery's collections. Every summer large exhibition projects take place in the Zámecká jízdárna in Hluboká; in 2026 they include the exhibitions Sny o krajině, Jiří Balcar and Jan Vičar.
