About the museum

The hunting château was built in 1708–1713 by Prince Adam František of Schwarzenberg on the bank of a pond not far from Hluboká. Originally only a kennel was planned, but the building grew into a representative structure with two courtyards and a banqueting hall on the upper floor. The hall is decorated with hunting scenes by the painter Johann Georg de Hamilton. The originals were taken abroad before the war, so copies now hang in their original places.

The museum was founded here in 1842 by Prince Jan Adolf II of Schwarzenberg. Its foundation consisted of specimens and trophies prepared by the forester Václav Špatný, and the collection of the hunter Jan Křtitel Heyrovský. The collection also served to train forestry staff, and a specialist library was created alongside it. At the provincial exhibition in Linz in 1867 it met with great success.

After 1947 the château passed to the state, and from 1961 the museum belonged to the Agricultural Museum. At that time the fishing collection was transferred here from Kačina, including plaster casts of salmon and historic nets. Today Ohrada is a branch of the National Agricultural Museum. In addition to its permanent exhibitions, it offers educational programs for schools, guided tours for groups and cultural events.
