About the museum

The Bruntál chateau grew out of a Late Gothic fortified manor that stood by the town fortifications. At the end of the 16th century the lords of Vrbno rebuilt it as a Renaissance chateau with an unusual circular-sector ground plan, arcades around the courtyard and a clock tower. In 1766–1771, under the Teutonic Order, the chateau was rebuilt to plans by the architect F. A. Neumann into its present Baroque form; further alterations came in the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The chateau park is part of the complex, and its origins go back to the 16th century. In the mid-17th century the Order laid out an ornamental garden here, and after 1894 the park underwent a major transformation under Grand Master Archduke Eugen of Habsburg, according to designs by Georg Hauberrisser. Today it is a landscape park of about 2.5 hectares, with remnants of the town walls, a terrace hall from the early 20th century, a bastion and eleven statues, mostly of sandstone, from the late 18th and 19th centuries.

The chateau is managed by the Bruntál Museum. Visitors walk through the chapel on the ground floor and the halls of the first floor, some of which have Rococo wall decoration and original furniture from the 18th to the early 20th century. The collections include Italian, Dutch, Flemish and German paintings from the 16th–18th centuries, and the chateau library is also significant. In the Old Palace from the early 16th century there are two permanent exhibitions, Nature of the Bruntál Region and Řemeslo má zlaté dno (Craft Has a Golden Bottom). The chateau is currently under reconstruction but remains open.
