About the museum
Around 1520 Petr of Žerotín, then a pledge holder of the estate, had a Late Gothic fortified manor built at Janovice. At the end of the 16th century Ferdinand Hoffmann of Grünbüchl acquired the estate and rebuilt the fortified manor into a Renaissance chateau. After 1625 the first major interventions in the interior took place during the re-Catholicisation, and in 1631–1664 Wolfgang Bedřich Hoffmann carried out extensive alterations.
In 1721 the estate passed by marriage to the Harrach counts, but the chateau remained only a secondary residence. Ferdinand Bonaventura II of Harrach created the count's apartment and reception rooms between 1742 and 1778. From 1884 the chateau was the permanent seat of the Janovice line of the Harrachs, and in the 19th century it acquired its present form. The line died out in 1937 with the death of František Harrach; the chateau was then used as a summer residence by his daughter Anna Marie and her husband.
In 1943 the estate was seized, and in July 1945 it was confiscated again. An internment camp for Germans was set up in the chateau, and part of the furnishings disappeared or was destroyed. In the 1950s a state archive was based in the chateau; it left in 2002, and the chateau then decayed until 2017. The National Heritage Institute took over the management of the chateau in 2019. Today a tour is offered of the newly opened interiors, which in the early 20th century were occupied by Count František Harrach, his family and staff.
