About the museum

The predecessor of today's castle was a medieval castle founded in the 1240s by Havel of Lemberk, husband of St Zdislava. Its main tower is the oldest surviving part. The castle gradually lost its Early Gothic appearance and in the mid-16th century was rebuilt as a Renaissance castle. Under the lords of Donín, around 1610, a wooden coffered ceiling with painted fables was made for the main hall, after which the hall is called the Fable Hall (bajkový sál).

From 1620 the estate belonged to Albrecht of Wallenstein, and after his death to the Breda family, who in 1660–1680 invited artists and builders from the Netherlands and Italy and had the castle rebuilt in the early Baroque style with rich stucco work. A Breda summer house with a garden was built nearby. From 1726 the castle belonged to the Gallas family and later the Clam-Gallas family, who used it as a country seat; after 1945 it became state property. During the Seven Years' War the Fable Hall served as a field hospital.

After 1951 a display of household culture was installed here in cooperation with the Museum of Decorative Arts in Prague. After part of the cornice fell in 1971, the castle was closed and underwent a general reconstruction; it reopened to the public in July 1992. Today the National Heritage Institute manages it and offers several tour routes, including an exhibition of historical styles and access to the Gothic tower.
