About the museum

The museum building on Náměstí 5. května was built in 1912 as a German school. After a hundred years the town set up a museum in it and gradually extended it with further exhibitions. Today it is run by the town of Stráž pod Ralskem as its organisational unit, and the same building also houses the tourist information centre and the municipal library.

The permanent exhibition follows the history of the town and recalls its founders, the Vartenberk family, as well as its famous natives. On the ground floor there is a display of a school classroom from the last century, as the building was originally a school. A separate section is devoted to the paratroopers who were part of the town's history, and to the associations active in Stráž.

The exhibition on mining and uranium extraction in the area of Stráž pod Ralskem is significant; it is complemented by historical photographs and examples of miners' tools. A further exhibition shows old photographs of the town.
