About the museum

The idea of building a fire-fighting museum in Chrastava arose during the celebrations of the 120th anniversary of the local volunteer fire brigade in 1988. The firefighters then exhibited several items they had restored by hand, and public interest persuaded them to bring the collection together in a permanent exhibition.

At the end of 1990 they acquired for the museum a dilapidated 18th-century cowshed in T. G. Masaryk Park, which had previously belonged to a state farm. The first clean-up work began in May 1991, and the volunteer firefighters then repaired the building themselves for several years, while restoring exhibits in their workshop at the same time. The museum was officially opened on 21 June 1997.

The collection includes hand and motor pumps, fire engines, ladders, stretchers, fire extinguishers, uniforms, decorations, documents and small objects from the history of firefighting. According to the town, it is the second largest museum of this kind in the Czech Republic. The museum is run by the Chrastava volunteer firefighters, who continue to restore further equipment.
