About the museum
Count Václav Vojtěch of Šternberk had the Troja Chateau built from 1679. He was inspired by the Roman suburban villas he had seen on his travels and wanted to bring a piece of the Eternal City to his native Bohemia. The design was prepared by the architect Jean Baptiste Mathey, of French origin, who drew on his experience from a stay in Italy. The centre of the building is a large hall, from which corridors lead to both sides with a row of salons, and the building is closed off at each side by tower-like belvederes.
The sculptural decoration of the double staircase leading into the garden was made by the Dresden artists Georg and Paul Hermann; the monumental statues depict the battle of the Titans against the gods of antiquity. The paintings on the ground floor were made mainly by Carpoforo Tencalla; on the first floor Francesco Marchetti and his son Giovanni Francesco worked. The illusionistic decoration of the great hall was created by the Flemish painters Abraham and Isaac Godyn.
Today the chateau is managed by the Prague City Gallery, which holds exhibitions there. The grounds, which include gardens that remain open in winter and the Karel bistro, are also part of the site. The premises can also be rented.
