Askø Ø-Museum
Small island museum on Askø with photographs, everyday objects, and furnished living rooms on life on Askø and Lilleø from about 1850 to 1950.
About the museum
The Askø Ø-Museum, usually called simply Askø Museum, is a small local history museum with an archive on the island of Askø in the Smålandsfarvandet north of Lolland. It is run by volunteers and housed in an outbuilding of the parsonage by the Askø Kirke.
Using photographs and objects, the exhibition shows how the residents of Askø and of the neighboring island of Lilleø, connected by a causeway, lived roughly between 1850 and 1950. A large part is furnished as a home with a kitchen, parlor, and bedroom; in addition there are flint tools from the Stone Age.
Beyond the exhibition, the museum maintains an open digital archive on the island's history. It ranges from a Stone Age settlement whose remains were discovered underwater off the coast in 2014, through the church, school, general store, ferry connection, storm surges, and the diked-in church bay, to the time as an independent municipality that was merged into Maribo in 1970 and into Lolland Kommune in 2007. Historical maps, photos, films, and family stories round out the offering.
