Nakskov Brandmuseum
Fire museum in Nakskov's old fire-engine house with historic fire engines, a civil defense exhibition and a DKW collection.
About the museum
Nakskov's fire brigade was established in 1886, when the town hired twenty firefighters. The foundation for the museum was laid by the Nakskov Brandmandsforening (firefighters' association) when it took over a retired fire engine from the municipal fire brigade and founded an association to maintain it. In 2002 the association was allowed to use an old fire station with a workshop on Elvej, in 2003 the museum was founded, which is also known in town as the "Sprøjtehuset".
The collection grew step by step: in 2007 a Mercedes-Benz fire engine from Falck's fleet was added, in 2010 a pump and a tipping hand-pump from the 1880s, which comes from Valløby and was restored in 2013–2014. In 2011 the museum was expanded. The oldest vehicle is a Plymouth motor pump from 1934.
For the town's anniversary in 2016, the volunteers also opened a DKW museum. It commemorates the engineer Jørgen Skafte Rasmussen, born in Nakskov, whose DKW brand became the world's largest motorcycle manufacturer in the 1920s and later merged into Auto Union, from which Audi emerged. Another department shows civil defense equipment from the Cold War era. With their vehicles, the association's members also regularly take part in events in the region.
