Danmarks Sukkermuseum
Volunteer-run museum in Nakskov about sugar beet cultivation and sugar production on Lolland, with a factory model and films.
About the museum
On the Danish South Sea islands, sugar production was the most important source of income for more than a century; at times more than half the population depended directly or indirectly on beet growing and sugar factories. The idea of preserving this history in Nakskov came in 1997 from a former laboratory manager of the sugar factory. With support from the factory management, beet growers, the municipality, and the tourist association, a working group was formed that gathered the first collection items as early as 1998 and temporarily stored them in a room of the sugar factory.
On May 6, 1999, Danmarks Sukkermuseum was founded, supported by a friends' association and donations from industry, agriculture, unions, and foundations. After a well-attended trial exhibition in the city library, a building was found on Løjtoftevej, where the museum opened on June 15, 2000.
The museum is still run by an association with around 300 members and by numerous volunteers. Thousands of objects have been collected since its founding, so space is running short. In an attached model workshop, volunteers are building a 1:50 scale replica of the Nakskov sugar factory as it was in the 1970s and 1980s. In a film room, the museum guides show historical films about the beet harvest and sugar production; lectures and changing themes are also offered.
