About the museum

The Bornholms Automobilmuseum goes back to the collecting passion of the former car dealer Ole Hermansen, who is also known to many Bornholmers from vintage car rallies on the island. He began his first restoration in 1973 with a Ford A from 1930; after that more and more vehicles were added, especially English sports cars. On June 5, 1989 he opened his collection to the public in Aakirkeby.

Today the exhibition comprises around 80 vehicles – cars, motorcycles, tractors, mopeds and stationary engines. They are complemented by old workshop equipment, advertising signs, traffic signs, model cars and technical memorabilia, which together give a picture of the early decades of the automobile. A furnished car workshop shows what it looked like around 1920.

Several vehicles have a Bornholm backstory, such as the island's first NSU Prinz or a Fordson delivery van from 1936 that a beekeeper from Aakirkeby drove for decades and that is displayed in nearly original condition. Among the rarities are a Belsize from 1911 and a Harley-Davidson from 1919. For its collection the museum received, among other honors, the cultural prize of the Aakirkeby Kommune (1999) and the DVK's Emil Prize (2013).
