Nexø Museum

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 50

About the museum

The striking building in the middle of Nexø harbor was built in 1796 as the guardhouse "Nexøe Vagt." It was built from sandstone from the Frederiks Stenbrud quarry, founded in 1754 north of the town; it replaced a dilapidated predecessor on the same site.

The building served its original purpose for only about 60 years. After the town built a new town hall, courthouse and jail on the old market square in 1856, the building at the harbor became a warehouse, was raised by two stories and was supplemented with additions for the harbor office, harbor scale and toilets, which later disappeared.

In 1968 the museum association for Nexø and surroundings was founded; after extensive renovation, the museum opened in 1970. The association's board still runs it today, sets up the exhibitions and registers objects and archival materials, which are kept in a separate storeroom on Pilebrovej.

On four levels, the museum covers the geology of eastern Bornholm and Nexø sandstone, fishing, engine building and the expansion of the harbor, the occupation, the Soviet bombardment of May 7 and 8, 1945 and the reconstruction with the Swedish houses, as well as schools, businesses, merchants and the town's old jail. On the first floor, a themed exhibition changes every year.
