Danmarks Cykelmuseum
Bicycle museum in the director's villa of the former Jyden bicycle factory in Aalestrup with around 200 bicycles, mopeds, radios, and sewing machines.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1974 from the remains of the Jyden bicycle factory in Aalestrup, which had closed in 1962. Because Harald Horn bought the old buildings together with their inventory, many bicycles that would otherwise have been scrapped were preserved. The collection is housed in the factory director's villa, built in 1921; the yellow neighboring buildings once served for production.
The house is one of the museums in northern Denmark that specifically focus on the technical development of the bicycle. The collection today comprises about 200 bicycles and around 55 mopeds – from the wooden running machine to well-known modern models. The oldest piece is a French velocipede by the Michaux brothers from 1865, of the kind used in France's first bicycle race from Rouen to Paris in 1869. The series of Wooler mopeds, which were built on the Jyden factory grounds, is particularly extensive.
Also on display are bicycles with auxiliary motors – including an example from 1902 –, bicycles belonging to Queen Ingrid, King Frederik IX, and Bertolt Brecht, and accessories from all eras. The collection is complemented by sewing machines from 1850 onward, radios up to the 1970s, historic wheelchairs, and a basement kitchen. The museum also lends bicycles and other objects for film, theater, and exhibitions.
