Johannes V. Jensen & Thit Jensen Museet
Literature museum in the birthplace of Nobel Prize winner Johannes V. Jensen in Farsø, also dedicated to his sister Thit Jensen.
About the museum
The museum has its origin in the birthplace of Johannes V. Jensen (1873–1950), the son of a veterinarian from Farsø, who received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1944. At the end of the 1980s, the small whitewashed house on the main street was so dilapidated that demolition threatened. The Lions Club Farsø, which had long been planning a museum for the Nobel laureate, had it restored with a great deal of volunteer work and collected donations; on September 7, 1991, the Johannes V. Jensen Museet was inaugurated.
A friends' association founded in 1999 pushed forward an expansion. The Nationalmuseet was willing to make Jensen's study furnishings, which had long been stored in its depot, available as a loan, provided a suitable extension was built. Based on plans by the architect Palle Breinholm, it was completed in 2008; the exhibition "Arbejdets Rum" with the furniture and objects from the study – the largest single loan in the history of the Nationalmuseet – opened in 2011.
In fall 2019 a further extension was added for the holdings from the memorial room of Thit Jensen, which had previously been shown on the market square of Farsø. Since then the house has carried the name of both siblings. The exhibition on Thit Jensen presents the writer and combative campaigner for women's rights who long stood in the shadow of her brother. The permanent exhibitions on Johannes V. Jensen were renewed in fall 2025 and reopened for the 2026 season.
