Danmarks Tekniske Museum
Denmark's museum of technology, industry, and inventions in Helsingør – with airplanes, vintage cars, a space capsule, and a hands-on workshop.
About the museum
The museum was founded in 1911 by the Handicraftsmen's Association in København and the Industriforeningen, today's Dansk Industri. Its holdings, however, go back further: they include, for example, Ole Rømer's prototypes for measures and weights from the 17th century and the collection of H. C. Ørsted with the instruments with which he discovered electromagnetism in 1820.
At first the museum was housed at the Polyteknisk Læreanstalt, today's Technical University of Denmark, in København; in 1965 it moved to Helsingør. Over the decades, large collections were added – objects from the Industrial Exhibition of 1888, holdings of the Danish Aviation Museum in Billund, the model collection of the Patent Office, communications technology from the Tage Schouboe Museet, vehicles of the Zone rescue service and the Vej og Bro Museet, and the collection on the inventor J. C. H. Ellehammer.
Today the museum shows about 150 years of technological history: from the Hammelvognen, according to the museum the oldest still-drivable car in the world, through aviation pioneers and fire and rescue vehicles to the Soyuz capsule of the first Danish astronaut, Andreas Mogensen. Workshops and play stations invite visitors to try things out. In the long term, the museum plans to move to the Svanemølleværket power plant in København-Nordhavn; it expects to open there in six to seven years.
