Helsingør Bymuseum
Helsingør's city museum in the cultural center Kulturværftet with changing exhibitions on the city's 600-year history – free admission.
About the museum
The Helsingør Bymuseum belongs to Museerne Helsingør, the city's municipal museums. Together with the Værftsmuseet and the Skibsklarerergaarden, it presents the history of Helsingør since the city was granted its charter in 1426. Two eras are at the center: the period of the Sound Dues from 1429 to 1857, when sailors and merchants from all over Europe came to the city, and the industrial era with the large shipyard between 1882 and 1983.
For a long time, the museum was housed in the Karmeliterhuset on Sct. Anna Gade, a building erected in 1520 by Carmelite monks as a hospital for foreign seamen, which served as the city museum from 1973. Displays there included a model of the city in 1801, portraits of citizens, and exhibitions on the occupation period; the building also housed the city history archive.
Today, the Bymuseum has its place on the third floor of the Kulturværftet, the cultural center in the former shipyard buildings at the harbor. In changing spotlight and special exhibitions, it takes up individual chapters of the city's history – for the city's 600th anniversary in 2026, for example, with poster designs and looks back at the 1926 celebration. The city model of 1801 was conserved at Kronborg and now also stands in the Kulturværftet. Admission is free.
