About the museum

The house at Strandgade 91 is over 400 years old, even if you can hardly tell. In 1637 the customs inspector Christen Rasmussen and his wife Kirstine Olufsdatter had it modernized – a few years after Christian IV rebuilt the burned-down Kronborg with money from the Sound Dues. For centuries, merchants, ship clearers, innkeepers, and lodging keepers lived here, whose livelihoods depended entirely on the Sound Dues. Around 1780 the house was thoroughly renovated and has hardly been altered since.

That the furnishings, office, and shop were preserved is owed above all to the two unmarried daughters of the last ship clearer, Truels Frederik Kierboe, who lived in the house until their deaths in 1926 and 1928 and changed almost nothing. In 1918 the building was placed under heritage protection; in 1943 the municipality bought it in order to protect the shop and office inventory permanently as well.

In 1993 the restaurateur Søren Fisker acquired the house with the aim of bringing the history of the Sound Dues to life here. In 1994–95 the conservation department of the Nationalmuseet restored the shop with its inventory from the 1820s and the skipper's room, and later also the elegant apartment on the main floor, which the museum furnished with fitting furniture. Today the municipality rents the house; it is run as part of Museerne Helsingør. Hosts in historical costume lead tours through the shop, office, and living rooms, and goods are sold in the shop as they were in the past.
