Viborg Kunsthal
Exhibition venue for contemporary art in the historic Brænderigården of 1734 on the Søndersø in Viborg, with café, shop, and garden.
About the museum
The Viborg Kunsthal is housed in an atmospheric building from 1734. In the 19th century, spirits were distilled here, which is the origin of the former name Kunsthal Brænderigården. Later the property served, among other things, as an outpatient clinic for alcoholics, as a reception facility for patients of disability services, and as a residence.
In 1994 the building was converted into an art hall. Since then it has been one of the important venues for contemporary art in Denmark and shows changing exhibitions by renowned Danish and international artists; it has no collection of its own. The Kunsthal is a member of the association of art halls in Denmark. The program includes artist talks, lectures, concerts, and workshops for children and adults; the venue also has an art school, the residency program Riddergade AIR, and two studios in which artists can live and work.
The garden of the Kunsthal is enclosed by a wall with a roughly 500-square-meter mosaic by the Danish artist Mette Winckelmann, inaugurated in November 2013. Its more than a hundred patterns allude to the history of the place, which goes back to the Middle Ages: archaeological finds suggest that Canute the Great, who was crowned king in Viborg, may have lived right here. The café and shop, with access to the garden and courtyard, are freely accessible even without visiting the exhibition.
