Museum Wibergis
New city museum of Viborg Museum in the former Vestre Landsret by the cathedral – opening at the end of 2026 with 1,000 years of the history of power and the city.
About the museum
Viborg Museum traces its origins to the society for collecting antiquities in Viborg, founded in 1861, and is thus one of the oldest provincial museums of cultural history in Denmark. Respected citizens of the town contributed the first collections. In 1960 the municipality took over the museum, and in 1961 it was officially recognized by the state as a regional museum. For a long time it showed its permanent exhibitions in the former Hedeselskabet building of 1868 on Hjultorvet, until they closed in January 2017.
Since then, Museum Wibergis has been under development as its new main building; the name means "Museum in Viborg". It is moving into the former Vestre Landsret, a building designed by the architect Kristoffer Varming in 1920 in the style of a Danish manor house, opposite the cathedral. For almost a hundred years one of Denmark's two high courts sat here, before the court moved into a new building in 2014. The municipality bought the building and has been converting it since 2023; in the process around 300 skeletons were excavated beneath the basement floor, which delayed the opening. In November 2025 the museum received the first wing of the building for setting up the exhibition.
On around 1,200 square meters, the new exhibition is to tell, in twelve chapters, how Viborg was for centuries the center of power of the king, the church, and the law in Jutland. Animations, colors, and specially composed music accompany about 550 objects, around 100 of them loans from the Nationalmuseet. The building is part of the redevelopment of the Domkirkekvarteret together with Skovgaard Museet and the cathedral. Viborg Museum also includes Hvolris Jernalderlandsby, E' Bindstouw, and De fem Halder.
