ENIGMA
Danish museum of postal, telecommunications and communication history in the old post office at Trianglen in København Ø.
About the museum
ENIGMA grew out of the former Post & Tele Museum, which was founded in 1913 and was most recently located on Købmagergade in the city center. At the end of 2015 the old building closed. The new museum moved into the former post office on Øster Allé at Trianglen in Østerbro and opened in January 2017, at first with a café, shop and event rooms; in February 2023 the expanded exhibitions and the children's area were added.
The museum is run by the Post/Tele Museumsfond, which the TDC Group and PostNord founded in 1996 to preserve Danish communication history. The museum holds the national collections on postal service and telecommunications, owns the largest stamp collection in Denmark and a specialist library. It receives no public subsidies from the state or the municipality.
The name comes from Greek and means riddle. It also refers to a showpiece of the collection: an Enigma cipher machine from the World War II era, which according to recent research is considered the oldest surviving of its kind.
The exhibitions span about 400 years – from the letter to the internet – and also deal with surveillance, encryption, fake news and communication in times of crisis. These include a play area for children, a playable arcade hall on the history of computer games and a makerspace.
