Østerbro lille Museum
Volunteer-run local museum on the history of the Copenhagen district of Østerbro, housed in a basement on Nyborggade.
About the museum
The museum's foundation is the local history collection of Helge Østergaard – photos, books, objects, and archival materials that he gathered over many years. With his wife, he ran a restaurant on Nordre Frihavnsgade for twelve years, where stories, slide shows, and talks about Østerbro were offered along with the meal.
When the couple moved to Bornholm in 2005, Carl-Einar Jørgensen, chairman and initiator of the neighborhood association Nabo Østerbro, acquired the collection with the support of a bank, church foundations, and private donors. The goal was a museum showing the development of the district from the past to today. On September 26, 2008, Østerbro lille Museum opened with a reception attended by the then Mayor for Culture, Pia Allerslev; shortly before, the volunteers had received the cultural prize "Kulturbuketten 2008" from the Østerbro Lokalråd. Jørgensen died in February 2025.
The museum receives no public subsidies and is run by volunteers, financed through membership fees and donations. The basement rooms below the meeting place of Nabo Østerbro contain a library, thousands of analog and digital pictures and articles, maps and objects, as well as a memory room with items from the recent past. Part of the picture archive and memory videos are also available online.
