Erichsens Gård
Listed townhouse from 1806 in the old town of Rønne with 19th-century living quarters and a historic garden.
About the museum
The townhouse on Laksegade in Rønne's old town was built in 1806 and extended in the 1830s and 1840s. In 1832, it was acquired by Kanzleirat (chancery councillor) Thomas Erichsen, after whom the property is named today. He married Michelle Westh in 1838; the couple had twelve children.
The house became known through two artists who frequented it: the Bornholm-born painter Kristian Zahrtmann portrayed the daughter Vilhelmine Erichsen, and the poet and painter Holger Drachmann married her in 1871. Memories of both are still present in the house today; their paintings themselves hang in Bornholms Kunstmuseum.
The entire property has been under heritage protection since 1919. In 1950, Elena Erichsen handed the house over to Bornholms Museum, which has operated it as a branch ever since. Visitors walk through parlors and rooms that show the life of a middle-class family in the second half of the 19th century, and learn more about the Erichsen family and their guests from the hostesses.
The house includes an old, quiet garden in which only plants that were available at the time the garden was created grow – including roses, perennials, lavender, herbs, fruit trees, and a ginkgo. On some days, pancakes are baked in the kitchen or mustard is ground.
