About the museum

Experimentarium opened on January 9, 1991, in Hellerup, north of København. Rather than exhibits behind glass, the museum has relied on hands-on participation from the start: visitors conduct experiments themselves and experience physical and biological phenomena directly. It is housed in a former bottling hall of the Tuborg brewery at Tuborg Havn.

From 2014, the building was fundamentally remodeled and expanded. The plans come from the Danish architecture firm CEBRA; a striking element is a large, spiral Helix staircase connecting the floors. A fire at the construction site in April 2015 delayed the work, and on January 26, 2017, the renewed science center opened. From 1991 to 2014, Asger Høeg directed the museum.

Experimentarium is an independent, state-supported knowledge-sharing center and is among the most visited attractions in Denmark; it is a member of Top Attraktioner and certified as a green attraction. Its roughly dozen exhibition areas range from the soap bubble room Bobleriet and the human body in Under Huden to play worlds for the youngest such as Miniverset and Legedalen. There are also an interactive roof terrace, shows, and extensive programs for schools and daycare centers.
