About the museum

The house on Langegade was built in 1630 as a merchant's courtyard by councilman Karsten Iversen; the present building was originally part of a larger complex. In 1836 the dyer Anton Hinke acquired the property, and for almost a hundred years it remained in the possession of the dyer's family – hence the name Farvergården.

In 1935 citizens of Kerteminde founded a museum association on their own initiative, which bought the house; in 1937 it opened as a museum. The painter Johannes Larsen chaired the association from 1937 until his death in 1961. Since 2009 Farvergården has belonged to Østfyns Museer, which emerged from the merger of the museums in Kerteminde and Nyborg. After an extensive restoration in which the red half-timbered facade regained its appearance from around 1900, the house reopened in 2010.

On three floors, the exhibitions tell of life in Kerteminde in earlier times, especially the daily life of craftsmen and fishermen. A small cinema shows films from Kerteminde from 1938 to 1962, and a separate exhibition for children leads into the Kerteminde of the 1900s. The house also includes a shop with mid-century-style goods, a small café, and a perennial garden in the courtyard.
