Odense Bunkermuseum
Odense's command center from the Cold War, preserved in its original state – a 450 m² nuclear bunker with weekend tours.
About the museum
The bunker was built in the early 1950s beneath the old farm Kragsbjerggård in southeast Odense and was put into operation in September 1954 as the municipality's command center. In the event of war, the city's infrastructure was to be run from here – with its own power, water and food supply, so that the facility could be completely sealed off for about a month.
Originally the bunker was designed for about 30 to 35 key personnel. In 1990, an extension with six rooms was added via a tunnel about 30 meters long, after which about 70 people could be accommodated. Observation posts on a silo, a high-rise and the tower of St. Knud's Church reported fires and damage to the center. The last exercise took place in 2007.
In 2012 the facility opened as a museum. Volunteers look after the bunker, whose Cold War technology is largely preserved in original, working condition: the amphitheater-like command room, the communications center with shielded telephone lines, the canteen and the engine room with its emergency generator. Supplementary exhibitions are devoted to civil defense, the threat from the East and police work.
