About the museum

The museum's foundation is the lifetime collection of Charles Erhardt Nielsen (1912–2007). A farm laborer and drainage master from Stubberup, he gathered objects on the history of the Hindsholm peninsula over decades, kept them in his house, and showed them there to interested visitors.

When Nielsen and his wife moved to a nursing home in Kerteminde in 1995, he donated the collection to Kerteminde Kommune, on the condition that it stay on Hindsholm. The municipality then set up a small museum in the disused school of Martofte, which opened in 1997. Later it belonged to the Østfyns Museer group.

When closure threatened in 2017, residents founded the association Hindsholm Egnsmuseum. Since then volunteers have continued to run the house in cooperation with the municipality and organize season openings, lectures, and member evenings.

The exhibition is divided into three areas: tools and equipment tell of hard fieldwork, crafts, and fishing, supplemented by an extensive collection of kitchen utensils. More than 500 birds, mammals, fish, and shellfish were collected and mounted by Nielsen himself. The collection of archaeological finds comes from large parts of Hindsholm, but above all from the lands of the manor estate Schelenborg.
