Fyns Militærhistoriske Museum
Volunteer-run museum in Odense's old barracks on 400 years of military history on Funen, the occupation period, and overseas deployments.
About the museum
In the spring of 1983, the collecting of objects on the military history of Funen began, mainly on the Fynske Livregiment. The barracks management made the attic of the oldest barracks building available for this, and on the regiment's 370th birthday in 1984 the Fyns Militærhistoriske Samling was officially opened in the presence of Prince Henrik. Soon sections were added on the Funen Home Guard, the Danish volunteers in British service (Ex-Army 45), and the resistance.
In 1996 the collection became an independent institution. After the regiment had been dissolved in the 1990s and the barracks acquired other users, the collection moved in 2002 into the main building of Kragsbjerggård. The municipality terminated this lease at the end of 2015; a replacement location at Dannebrogsgade 1 had to be vacated again after a little over a year.
Finally the museum took over from Odense Municipality the former administration building as well as the guard and detention buildings of the barracks on Søndre Boulevard – and thus returned to its place of origin. Volunteer seniors are developing the rooms in stages; the first floor is to be completed in 2026. On display are exhibitions on April 9, 1940, on the occupation period, and on the defense of Funen over 400 years, as well as a collection on the roughly 2,500 Danes who served in the British army in 1945–48 and on later overseas deployments. Around 20 volunteers look after the museum, which also offers lectures and bicycle and city tours.
