About the museum

With the opening of the København–Gedser railway line and the Gedser ferry port in 1886, the Gedser Remise (engine shed) came into being as well. The locomotive shed with its large turntable was the place where trains were turned, serviced, and parked, and was regarded as the heart of the then newly growing town. The facility was built at the instigation of the industrialist C. F. Tietgen, who had received the concession as a result of a postal agreement with Germany. The Remise was expanded in 1905, 1915, and 1941.

When it became apparent in 1987 that DSB would give up the site, citizens and railway enthusiasts founded the Bevaringsforeningen Gedser Remise to save the building and historic rolling stock. Since then the Remise has been run by volunteers as a railway museum that recalls the heyday of the railway. On display in the old halls are locomotives, carriages, and historic work areas; at the same time, it tells the story of ferries, stations, and service buildings in Denmark's southernmost town.

A special attraction is "Det Gule Palæ": the yellow signal box, known as the command post in the Olsen Gang film "Olsenbanden på Sporet", stood unused for years on a DSB site in København and was to be demolished. In September 2016 it came to Gedser, was renovated with the support of a fan club, foundations, and volunteers, and opened as a small museum in September 2017. In summer and at Easter, the association also organizes trips with historic trains between Nykøbing F and Gedser.
