Nykøbing Falster Brandmuseum
Volunteer-run fire museum in Nykøbing Falster with historic fire engines, plus a hairdressing, radio and photography museum in the same building.
About the museum
The museum's starting point is a motor pump on a Triangel chassis from 1935, which served with the Nykøbing Falster municipal fire brigade until 1969. When Falck took over fire protection, the vehicle went to the Nationalmuseet, which kept it in storage for almost two decades and returned it on loan to its home town in 1987. Local Falck employees then founded the Triangelklubben, which has looked after the vehicle ever since.
In 1989 the association acquired another pump from the old municipal fire brigade, a Fordson Thames from 1954. When the former fire station was due to be demolished, the municipality provided a hall in the decommissioned power plant – on the condition that a museum be established there. The fire museum opened on May 1, 1994. Through cooperation with the Falck Museum, the Ford turntable ladder from 1938, among others, returned to Nykøbing, and a second hall soon followed.
Today the building shows six vehicles, numerous pumps, uniforms and equipment from more than a hundred years of rescue services in two vehicle halls and on the upper floor. In 2008 the Frisørmuseum moved in with complete salons, joined by a radio museum with devices mainly from Bang & Olufsen and a photography museum with the camera collection of a local photographer. The museum is an independent institution, run on a volunteer basis by active and former firefighters, and financed mainly through membership fees.
