Museum Obscurum

Exhibition on belief and superstition in Czarens Hus in Nykøbing Falster, centered on the secret cabinet of curiosities of the collector Cornelius S.C. Rödder.

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 95

About the museum

The roots of the house go back to 1913, when an association for preserving the memories of Falster was founded in Nykøbing Falster. Citizens of the island gathered cultural-historical objects, which were first stored in a municipal administration building. In 1923 Consul Jeppesen donated Czarens Hus, a half-timbered building from the 18th century, to the association, and the collection moved in in 1924. In 1946 Falsters Minder received state recognition, and in 1953 the association became an independent institution.

For decades the museum showed the history of the town of Nykøbing from the Middle Ages to modern times, including a reconstructed shopping street, traditional costumes, toys, and an exhibition on the demolished Nykøbing Castle. In 2009 Falsters Minder merged with the Stiftsmuseum in Maribo to form Museum Lolland-Falster.

In autumn 2017 its operation as a classic cultural history museum ended. Since then Museum Lolland-Falster has used the house for Museum Obscurum: the exhibition tells, with a wink, of a hidden room discovered during renovation work containing the collection of the fictional merchant, explorer, and occultist Cornelius S.C. Rödder. Among mythical creatures, stuffed animals, and curiosities, it is about belief, superstition, and the question of whom and what one can trust. In 2018 the exhibition received the Erneuerungspreis (renewal award) of the Historiske Dage.

The entrance is Den Gamle Købmandshandel, a grocery store in the style of the 1950s with original furnishings from Skottemarke on Lolland, which today houses the museum shop and tourist information.
