Gellerup Museum
Small museum in an apartment on the 6th floor in Gellerupparken about everyday life and change in Aarhus's large housing estate – with a 1970s-style apartment.
About the museum
Gellerup Museum was set up in 2010 in one of the original apartments of Gellerupparken, one of the largest social housing estates in Denmark, whose apartment blocks were built from the late 1960s. The five-room apartment of about 129 square meters is on the sixth floor at Gudrunsvej 16; the museum therefore likes to call itself the highest-situated museum in Denmark.
Because the rent could no longer be financed, the museum was closed for almost three years and reopened in August 2022 after the city of Aarhus provided funds; the open-air museum Den Gamle By advised on the redesign. In 2026, Brabrand Boligforening and Landsbyggefonden secured operations until at least the end of 2027.
One room is furnished as an apartment is supposed to have looked in the 1970s. In the other rooms, exhibitions alternate on the history of the neighborhood, its residents, and the ongoing transformation of Gellerup and Toveshøj as part of the Helhedsplan (comprehensive plan). From the balcony the view extends across the Byparken, the Brabrand Sø, and Aarhus to – in clear weather – Samsø. The museum is run jointly by Brabrand Boligforening and the volunteers of the association Gellerup Museums Venner.
