Hjemstavnsgården Gjellergaard

About the museum

The Gjellergaard farm on the Gjeller Odde peninsula north of Lemvig was built in the second half of the 19th century and represents the building style of West Jutland fisher-farmers, who practiced farming and fishing at the same time. In 1948 Lemvig Kommune bought the property as part of placing part of the peninsula under protection and rented it out as a summer house until 1986; after that the building quickly fell into disrepair.

On the initiative of the senior club in Klinkby, the idea arose to restore the farm faithfully to its original state and run it as a living museum with volunteers. With funds from Ringkøbing Amt, the municipality, and several foundations, Gjellergaard was restored from 1992 to 1993; the helpers harvested the thatch for the roof themselves at Ferring Sø. In the living quarters, clay brick walls, doors, parts of the floors, and ceiling beams were preserved, and the parlors are furnished with old furniture as at the end of the 19th century. The stable and barn were largely rebuilt and today house a coffee room with a kitchen. The farm first opened to visitors in June 1993.

In 1996 a small sheep house was added, in which restored agricultural and fishing tools are displayed; a tar works and an old Limfjord boat followed later. Gjellergaard is run by the local heritage association Gjellergaard-Foreningen and around two dozen volunteers, who also organize lectures, concerts, and open-air church services. The farm lies in an internationally protected Ramsar area; the poet Thøger Larsen, who was born here, drew inspiration from this landscape.
