Museet for Religiøs Kunst
Art museum on the Limfjord in Lemvig for religious and existential art, including works by Bodil Kaalund, Georges Rouault, and Marc Chagall.
About the museum
The impetus for the museum was the large decoration of Lemvig Kirke, which the painter Bodil Kaalund created between 1976 and 1981. From the collaboration of the artist with the local population came many conversations about the nature of art and its relationship to church and faith – this dialogue on existential questions remains the guiding theme of the museum to this day.
The museum stands on the site of the town's former summer restaurant, which had burned down, directly on the Limfjord at the entrance to Lemvig harbor. With support from the town, the county, and private foundations, the first construction phase with a café and two small exhibition halls was built in 1994, designed by the Lemvig architect Poul Jørn Poulsen. In 1998 came the Kaalundsal for changing exhibitions (architect Svend Aage Jensen), and in 2006 the Kirkesal.
The collection includes works by Bodil Kaalund, including Bible illustrations, as well as works by Georges Rouault, Marc Chagall, Peter Brandes, and other 20th-century artists. In recent years it has been significantly expanded with works by younger artists; the museum deliberately interprets the concept of religious art broadly. The ticket desk and café are staffed by numerous volunteers.
