About the museum

Lemvig Museum was founded in 1931 as an independent institution; it is run by the museum association for Lemvig and surroundings, financed with grants from Lemvig Kommune and the Danish Ministry of Culture. As a state-recognized museum, it is responsible for the cultural history of the entire municipality.

Since the 1930s the Vesterhus has served as the museum building. The house of 1841 originally belonged to a large merchant's yard and was used as a warehouse, barn, and threshing floor. It was built during a heyday of the town, after the North Sea broke through the spit in front of the Limfjord in 1825 and Lemvig merchants could send ships to England and Hamburg.

The exhibitions tell of the trading town and its farming hinterland, of shipwrecks on the dangerous west coast, and of the region's connections to port cities in Germany, Holland, and England. One focus is the poet Thøger Larsen, whose study from his house at Lemvig Sø is shown unchanged. Shortly before the death of the cartoonist Henning Gantriis in 1989, the museum acquired about 100 original drawings for his comic "Livets gang i Lidenlund", set in Lemvig; later more strips, sketches, and his drawing table were added.

The museum also includes Jens Søndergaards Museum in Ferring and the Flyvholm rescue station near Harboøre. In 2025 the museum recorded a record number of visitors, thanks in part to exhibitions on the chemical company Cheminova and on the 150th birthday of Thøger Larsen.
