Håndværksmuseet
Tool museum in the old granary of Lützhøfts Købmandsgård in Roskilde, with tools used by woodworking craftsmen from 1800 to 1950.
About the museum
The Håndværksmuseet is located on the second floor of the former granary of Lützhøfts Købmandsgård (merchant's yard) on Ringstedgade. The merchant Elias Lützhøft moved his trading yard to this address in 1892; grain and animal feed were traded in the large warehouse building, and groceries and hardware in the shop. While other merchant yards in the town had to make way for parking lots and new buildings, Lützhøfts remained in operation until 1979 and is now a museum itself.
The foundation of the tool collection was donated by the timber merchant Børge Dahl in 2003. The exhibition follows the path of wood from the forest to the finished product and shows tools from about 1800 to 1950 – from woodturners, wheelwrights, carpenters, joiners, coopers, wooden-shoe makers, and woodcarvers, along with equipment for felling and sawing. Highlights include a large lathe and the simple carving bench of a wooden-shoe maker; at the end of the tour, a view into the Naverhulen awaits.
On the first floor, two private craft businesses, a woodcarver and a textile workshop, are at work, and visitors can watch over their shoulders. Like the merchant's yard exhibition, the museum belongs to ROMU, the museum group for Roskilde, Lejre, and Frederikssund. Admission is free.
