About the museum

The museum is based on a donation made in 1995 by Marion Heerup, widow of the artist Henry Heerup (1907–1993), to the Rødovre Kommune. It comprised works and personal belongings that were still in his possession at his death – partly in his garden in Rødovre, which served as his studio and meeting place for half a century, and partly in his apartment in Vanløse.

Since a museum at his former workplace in the garden was not possible, the municipality opted for a new building at the community center Rødovregaard, the last large farm of the old village of Rødovre. The extension, designed by the architect Bernd Kjelland, has about 425 square meters of floor space, about 200 square meters of which are exhibition rooms. It receives its daylight through a skylight band with movable slats, which allow cool northern light and warm southern light to be mixed. The museum opened in 2000.

The house is run as an institution with subsidies from the Rødovre Kommune and is supported by its own museum council. Each year it shows three changing exhibitions with paintings, prints, drawings, stone sculptures and the so-called scrap models made from found objects, often in dialogue with other artists. A look into Heerup's study with tools, sketches and inspirational material complements the presentation.
