About the museum

Hillerød Bymuseum is now part of Museum Nordsjælland. Its roots lie in the Nordsjællandsk Folkemuseum, founded in 1925, which dealt with the rural culture of North Zealand before industrialization and also served as the city museum of Hillerød. The first museum was a thatched farmstead in the palace garden of Frederiksborg that no longer exists today. In 2005 the institution renamed itself Folkemuseet; besides the city museum, it included the Elværket, the Æbelholt Abbey Museum and the open-air museum Husmandsstedet. In 2014 it merged with the Hørsholm Egns Museum and the cultural center in Gilleleje to form Museum Nordsjælland.

The museum is located in a red brick house on Jægerbakke in the palace park of Frederiksborg. On the first floor it shows how a village by the royal hunting residence became a palace town and later a modern railway town – with large city models, lighting effects and a look at the Nordsten machine factory, for a long time the town's largest employer.

On the second floor, "Tidens Gade" (Street of Time) invites visitors to act out everyday life of past decades: with a classroom, toy shop, grocer's shop, hair salon and painter's workshop. The museum is aimed especially at families with children between 2 and 12 years.
