Esrum Kloster & Møllegård
Former Cistercian monastery and royal hunting lodge near Esrum with exhibitions on monastic life, a water mill, monastery garden, and nature playground.
About the museum
In 1151, Cistercian monks from France came to Esrum; Archbishop Eskil of Lund had given them the land. Over the following roughly 400 years, the monastery became one of the largest and most powerful in the country: the monks built an extensive complex, created ponds, canals, and mills, their abbots at times sat on the Council of the Realm, and the landholdings covered about a third of North Zealand.
With the Reformation in 1536, the monastery fell to the Crown. The church and large parts of the complex were demolished, and the surviving wing was converted into a royal hunting lodge. Later a royal stud and a dragoon regiment were housed here; Christian IV had the Esrum Å straightened and a new water mill built, and about two hundred years later the Møllegård was built. From 1796 the building served for over a hundred years as the seat of the county administration, and from 1931 as a storage facility of the Nationalmuseet; during World War II, works by Søren Kierkegaard from the Royal Library, among other things, were stored here.
In 1996, Frederiksborg Amt took over the complex, had it archaeologically investigated and restored, and opened it to visitors in 1997. Today light and sound installations tell of the monks' daily life, the monastery cellar shows finds from 900 years, and the exhibition "Øje for landskab" is devoted to the interplay of people and landscape. The grounds also include the water mill, the monastery garden, and a nature playground; the Møllecaféen is run as a social enterprise.
