About the museum
The whaling station at Áir is the last of seven whaling stations that Norwegian companies set up in the Faroe Islands between 1894 and 1905. The station was built by Chr. Salvesen & Co., a company with Norwegian roots and a base in Scotland, and it is regarded as Norwegian industrial heritage.
The station changed owners several times. In 1958, Pf. Hvalarakstur, managed by J.F. Kjølbro, ended its operations. Whaling declined in the 1960s and 1970s, and in 1984 the last whale was shot and processed at the station. Today the station is part of the exhibitions of the National Museum of the Faroe Islands.
