Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg
Museum of modern art in Aalborg in Alvar Aalto's only museum building outside Finland, with a sculpture park and a collection from 1900 onward.
About the museum
The museum's roots go back to the 1870s: the Aalborg art association, founded in 1851, built up a permanent collection at that time, which from 1879 was shown together with the historical museum in a building on Algade. In 1891 the Aalborg Kunstmuseum became an independent institution with its own board.
A building of its own was a long time coming. A Nordic architectural competition was won in 1958 by Alvar Aalto, Elissa Aalto and Jean-Jacques Baruël. The white marble building was constructed in 1969–1972 in a former gravel pit below the Aalborgtårnet and opened in June 1972 as Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum. Its characteristic features are the lighting through skylights and side windows, the Aalto lamps and furniture, and the sculpture park with amphitheater that Aalto helped design. The building has been listed since 1995.
From 1967 the first director, Lars Rostrup Bøyesen, professionalized the museum; with private collections, works of Danish modernism, CoBrA, the School of Paris, Surrealism and Fluxus were added. In 1980 the museum was one of the first in Denmark to stage exhibitions specifically for children. Since 2008 it has been called Kunsten Museum of Modern Art Aalborg.
Following a comprehensive restoration in 2014–2016, a new darkenable exhibition hall, workshops, a visitor elevator and a new storage facility were added. The collection today comprises almost 4,000 works of Danish and international art from the early 20th century to the present.
