About the museum

The reason for founding the museum was the submarine Springeren of the Delfin class – the last submarines designed and built in Denmark. When the boats were due to be decommissioned, the chairman of the Aalborger Marineforening and the city administration campaigned from 1986 to preserve one of them. The then Minister of Defense gave Springeren to the city of Aalborg on permanent loan, on the condition that the boat be fully exhibited.

With support from companies, institutions, private individuals and EC funds, the Aalborg Søfarts- og Marinemuseum was created within two years in a maritime setting on the Limfjord. Prince Henrik inaugurated it on May 24, 1992. The site covers about 15,000 square meters, of which roughly 1,800 are under cover.

On September 10, 2011, a fire caused by a short circuit in the ship simulator destroyed large parts of the exhibition; among other things, the Greenland collection and the ship radio equipment could not be saved. With the reconstruction, the museum was renamed Springeren – Maritimt Oplevelsescenter in 2012 and reopened in August 2012.

Besides the submarine, the center now displays the torpedo boat Søbjørnen from 1963, gun turrets, mines, a helicopter and the princess dinghies in which Queen Margrethe and her sisters learned to sail. Inside, there are more than 600 ship models, uniforms and other collections on North Jutland seafaring.
