About the museum

The architect Jørn Utzon, famous for the Sydney Opera House, spent his first 19 years in Aalborg. The harbor setting and the shipyard where his father, Aage Utzon, worked as a naval engineer and boat designer shaped his idea of form, material, and construction for good.

On the waterfront of his hometown, Utzon designed the Utzon Center together with his son Kim Utzon. It was inaugurated in May 2008 and remained his last work; Utzon died in November of the same year at the age of 90. The building is grouped around a wind-sheltered atrium courtyard with a glass corridor; it includes two exhibition halls, a workshop for architecture students of Aalborg Universitet, a library, the Utzon archive, the Obelske Auditorium with a vaulted ceiling and fjord views, and the restaurant JØRN.

The operator is the Utzon Fonden, founded in 2006 in the course of construction, which also looks after Utzon's holiday home Can Lis in Mallorca. The center shows changing exhibitions on architecture and design, plus the permanent story of the Sydney Opera House. One focus is on programs for children and families, with workshops, school programs, and a walk-in LEGO city. The Utzon Center shares its management and annual pass with the art museum Kunsten.
