About the museum

Lille Mølle was built in 1669 as a post mill on the rampart of Christianshavn and converted into a Dutch-style windmill in 1783. Along with the Kastellet mill, it is one of only two surviving rampart mills in København. Milling ended in the 1890s, and the building then fell into disrepair for a long time.

In 1916, the young engineer Ejnar Flach-Bundegaard bought the mill and its outbuildings and set up an instrument factory and a residence there. Together with his wife Johanne, he furnished the octagonal mill house in the National Romantic farmhouse style and filled it with travel souvenirs and curiosities from around the world. Over five floors, a winding home took shape with parlors, grottoes, secret rooms, a wine cellar and a banquet hall, where the sociable couple hosted numerous parties.

After Ejnar's death in 1949, Johanne lived in the mill until 1973. Shortly before her death, the house passed to the Nationalmuseet (National Museum of Denmark), which ran it as a period-interior museum but discontinued public tours in 2012. The couple's foundation has since bought the mill back and taken over its operation. Since autumn 2019, the listed building has been open again for guided tours and cultural events; the rooms have largely been preserved as the couple left them.
