Nordatlantens Brygge
Cultural center for art and culture from Greenland, Iceland, and the Faroe Islands in a warehouse from 1767 on the harbor of Christianshavn in København.
About the museum
The warehouse of almost 7,000 square meters was built in 1766–67 by master mason J. C. Conradi on the site of the Greenland trade (Den Grønlandske Handels Plads) in Christianshavn. The site had been filled in in the mid-18th century and remained for about 200 years the transshipment point for trade with Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Finnmark: stockfish, salted herring, whale oil, and furs were unloaded, stored, and resold here. Known first as the Icelandic and later as the Greenlandic warehouse, it belonged from 1774 to the Royal Greenland Trading Department (KGH).
In the 1950s and 1960s the site experienced its busiest period, before KGH moved shipping to Aalborg in the early 1970s and abandoned the area entirely in the 1980s. After that, the transformation into a new city district began.
In 2003 Nordatlantens Brygge opened in the large warehouse as an independent cultural institution whose boards include representatives from Denmark, Iceland, the Faroe Islands, and Greenland. Alongside exhibition, conference, and event spaces, the official representations of the three countries moved in; until 2017 the restaurant Noma was also based here. Today the house shows art exhibitions year-round by established and young artists from the North Atlantic, as well as concerts, films, readings, and lectures. On the quay stands the permanent walk-in glass installation "Kosmisk rum" by the Faroese artist Tróndur Patursson.
