Limfjordsmuseet
Maritime museum on Frederik VII's Canal in Løgstør: fishing and seafaring on the Limfjord, aquariums with touch tanks, a boatbuilding workshop, and canal cruises.
About the museum
The Limfjordsmuseet was founded in 1964 by citizens of Løgstør and moved into the former residence of the canal warden on Frederik VII's Canal. The 4.4-kilometer-long canal was dug by hand in 1856–61 by about 400 German workers to spare ships the dangerous sandbanks off Løgstør. In operation until 1913, it made it possible for the first time to sail all the way through the Limfjord; today it is a protected cultural monument and is regarded as the crown jewel of the museum's collection.
Today it is a state-recognized museum for the maritime cultural history of the Limfjord. In 2008, the Maritime Experience Center was added, which shows fishing, seafaring, beach hunting, storm surges, and boatbuilding and, with aquariums, brings to life the fjord before and after the North Sea breakthrough at Agger in 1825. In 2019, the exhibition "Den fantastiske fjord" about seafaring through the centuries opened in the canal warden's residence.
In the historic boatbuilding workshop, craftsmen and volunteers restore the floating exhibits; the fleet includes 16 boats, among them KIRSTINE, the largest surviving vessel. In summer, the hand-operated swing bridge turns over the canal, and the excursion boat GREVINDE DANNER takes guided trips as far as the canal keepers' houses in Lendrup. There are also bus trips in a 1954 Bedford vintage bus, a snaps distillery of its own, and festivals such as the Mussel Festival.
