About the museum

Fur Museum was founded in 1953 by Magne Breiner Jensen and opened in 1954; in 1960 it received state recognition. From the start, the focus was on the island's Moler – a deposit of diatoms and volcanic ash in which animals and plants from about 55 million years ago have been exceptionally well preserved.

The museum building was expanded in 1960, 1978, and 1988. In 1994 the museum took over a pound-net house at the silted-up old harbor of the island, and in 1997 a four-winged farmstead from 1856 was added, which now shows the life of the fisher-farmers on Fur. In 2021 the museum received a new entrance area. Since 2008, Fur Museum has been part of the Museum Salling group.

The collection includes many thousands of fossils of over 500 species – fish, birds, turtles, insects, and plants – including numerous specimens known worldwide only from here. A showpiece is the so-called Tysker-fisken ("German fish"), a large fish found in 1985 by a German vacationer, whose discovery contributed to the introduction of the Danish Danekræ law protecting natural history finds. The collection also serves research and is loaned to scientists around the world.
