Melstedgård
Living farm museum near Gudhjem with animals, an old farmhouse, and a food culture house on Bornholm's agriculture and food culture.
About the museum
Melstedgård near Gudhjem was a mid-sized Bornholm farm with a four-sided courtyard and roughly 30 to 45 hectares of land. After farming operations ceased in 1982, Bornholms Museum took over the farm and opened it in 1984 as an open-air and agricultural museum.
Since then, the department has shown how people lived and worked on a Bornholm farm. In the farmhouse with its old furnishings, mustard is ground with a cannonball and bread is baked. In the stables, pigs, sheep, and goats are kept in separate rooms as they used to be, chickens and cats roam freely across the farmyard, and across the road horses, cows, goats, and geese graze on the way to the old mill.
In 2015 the modern Madkulturhuset was added opposite the half-timbered farm, hosting workshops on topics such as fermenting, brewing, or ice cream making. Since then, the food culture of Bornholm, past and present, has stood alongside everyday farm life. The farm café Skafferiet offers coffee, cake, meals, and Bornholm specialties and crafts.
