Moseløkken Stenbrudsmuseum

Museum in the still-active Moseløkken granite quarry near Allinge: stonemason demonstrations and hands-on granite working.

Opening hoursAdmission from DKK 90

About the museum

The Moseløkken Stenbrudsmuseum is on the Hammerknuden peninsula in northern Bornholm, in the middle of an old granite quarry where stone is still quarried on a small scale today. The museum is housed in one of the quarry's former workshop buildings and shows how the island's stone industry has developed over the past roughly 150 years. On Bornholm, sandstone has been quarried since the 18th century; in the 19th century granite quarrying was added, which strongly shaped the north of the island.

The exhibition presents the tools and equipment of the quarrymen and explains the various trades in the quarry – from driller and splitter to stonecutter. Historic photos, videos on modern stone extraction and examples of the island's different types of rock round out the picture.

A special feature is the hands-on approach: a stonemason demonstrates old working techniques, and visitors may work on granite themselves with hammer, chisel and drill. The museum receives no public funding; it is financed through admission fees and is supported by a friends' association, Stenbrudsmuseets støtteforening.
